Questions people ask
Can foreigners buy property in South Africa?
Yes. Non-residents may own property in South Africa outright, as long as the purchase is at a fair market price and paid for in an approved way, normally with funds brought in through a South African bank.
How much can a non-resident borrow from a South African bank?
No more than the money brought in from abroad, a one-to-one ratio under exchange control rules. In practice that is up to about half of the price. Non-residents who live and work in South Africa can borrow on normal terms.
Can I take the money out again when I sell?
Yes. Sale proceeds of property owned by a non-resident can be transferred abroad, provided the funds that came in were properly recorded, so keep the bank’s record of the foreign money you brought in.
